Chompy Hat

I taught myself to crochet. You really can learn anything online! I have always loved doing crafts, and I thought crocheting was a little more appropriate than gluing popsicle sticks to each other and covering it in glitter.
One day at work my manager asked me if I actually could crochet. He brought up the time that he had asked me how my weekend was, and I told him I had been watching cartoons and crocheting. Once I told him it was the truth, he asked me to make his stepson a Chompy hat for his birthday. I had no idea what a Chompy was, but after some research I discovered it's a Skylanders character.
Unfortunately, I could not find a pattern. I am not very confident in my crochet skills yet, so I ended up using and modifying bits of other patterns. Allow me to show you how I did it!!

Chompy Hat

To start off, I made basic hat. I recommend one that uses single crochet, as you will be sewing stuffed bits onto it later. I used this pattern. Crochet the hat in green, and for the very last row switch to red.
Next, hop on over to this pattern for a chompy doll. Follow the directions for the eyestalks.

For the legs, I sort of made up my own thing.

Make 2
Work in the round. Do not join. Use a stitch marker to mark your rounds
R1: Sc 6 into a magic circle (6)
R2: 2sc in each st around (12)
R3: *2sc, then sc the next st* repeat between * to end of the round (18)
R4 - R16: Sc in each st around
Finish off, leaving a tail long enough to sew the leg to the hat

I used the doll pattern as a starting point to know how big to make the arms. This is how they turned out in the end.

Make 2
Work in round, same as legs
Ch20
R1 - R14: Sc in each st around
1st claw: Pinch the end together and crochet through both sides, skipping the first st on the back side (there will be 1 unworked  on either side of the hand)
Claws
Sc 3, ch1 and turn
Sc dec, sc 1, ch1 and turn
Sc 1, tie off
Join next unworked st, repeat last 3 rounds
Join next unworked st, repeat one last time to complete the 3rd claw

Stuff all the parts. Make sure to firmly stuff base of eye stalks.
When I made the teeth, I made a triangle too wide so I ended up sewing them in sideways from what I intended.

Make 7
Ch2
R1: 2sc in second ch from hook, ch1
R2: 2sc, sc, ch1
R3: 2sc, sc, 2sc, ch1
Sc evenly around outside of triangle
Sew in ends, attach 4 teeth to top of mouth and 3 to bottom.

Oopsie! Didn't frame that pic very well! :s

Sew all the parts on the hat using the picture as a guide.

There you have it! Here's a picture of the hat with it's new, proud owner! Feel free to make this yourself, just make
sure to link back here if you post it anywhere!
I've already finished the next project on my creative adventure, I just need to give it away before I can post about it. It's a present!

Stay tuned!
